In this hands-on and engaging class, students learn about physics concepts such as force, motion, Newton's Laws, inertia, potential, and kinetic energy through the creation of Rube Goldberg chain reactions. Students are challenged to use their new knowledge to develop their chain reactions, but together we will create a three-step reaction.

About the Course

Rube Goldberg was a cartoonist and inventor who created complicated machines that were described as new inventions to do easy tasks in a fun way through a series of steps involving chain reactions.

In Chain Reaction Challenge, we will learn about the physics of objects in motion and Newton's Laws to create our chain reactions. Students will learn about force, motion, inertia, potential, and kinetic energy and how they work together in these types of motion-related reactions. I will model different kinds of reactions, and we will work together to start chain reactions and complete at least three-step reactions before the end of class.

Students have a blast as they are challenged to create more complicated chain reactions to use their new skills. Students are encouraged to continue the engineering process to develop longer, creative reactions that fit their skill levels. Students will design and create working models of several of the simple machines. Lastly, we will explore how simple machines can be used in combination to create fun, chain reaction courses. Each learner will design, create, and test their course. Students will be asked to share and collaborate throughout the process.
