About the Course

Do you think there could possibly be aliens living on earth? What would you call a species that lives somewhere it is not originally from? All around the world, there are animals, invertebrates, and plants being introduced to places they are not native to. Do you think this is helpful or harmful? In this exciting problem-based learning course, we will discover and problem solves the introduction of invasive species happening in the world today.

During our program, the students will lead conversations, interact with other students, and use their critical thinking skills to help solve a worldwide problem. They will play games, listen to stories, research through a hands-on mapping activity, lead discussions, and complete a final project. Project-based learning allows students to engage and actively explore solutions together.

We will start by exploring the students' background knowledge of invasive animals. In this interactive debate-like activity, each student will be the student leader where they will be in charge of leading the discussion. They will listen to Invasion in Paradise, a story about an invasive species that takes over a beautiful island that it is not native to. This will help the students connect the characters to the real-world problem of invasive species. They will play the online game Invaders: Plum Landing for visual and kinesthetic learning. We will engage in many interactive activities such as mapping to learn, comparing and contrasting before and after pictures, data collection, and learning new vocabulary through play.

We will finish the course by seeing what other students around the world are actively doing to solve the same problem. For the final project, the students will create and present their most wanted invasive species poster to the class. This course will broaden the students' awareness of all living species and teach them about how humans can affect the environment.
