About The Course

Did you know that storytelling is as old as human language? Did you know that 65% of conversations are based on storytelling? Creating stories offers kids a creative and effective way to express their ideas and emotions. To invent stories, children have to activate their imagination, consider logical solutions for every situation, maintain consistency and formulate potential problems and solutions.

During this course, students will unleash their imagination, sharpen their memory, enhance their communication skills, and improve social skills. They will brainstorm and discuss different ideas with their peers, participate in various engaging activities, and experience amazing hands-on projects.

We will start by introducing the foundation of stories including different formats of stories, famous story writers, and the importance of stories. We will individually discuss six story elements-plot, theme, setting, character, conflict, and solution. Students will learn different types of plots and themes, as well as techniques to enhance settings and characters. We will give students a checklist to help them develop fully rounded, lifelike characters. Students will learn all kinds of conflicts, and the key components of story resolutions. By spinning the wheel, students will get a random theme, character, setting, conflict, and resolution and they will come up with their own plot mountain describing the events in the story!

It’s time to outline our own story structures! We will then introduce StoryJumper to students. Students will learn the ins and outs of StoryJumper including adding images, text, and audio as well as using props, scenes, and photos. They will then apply the elements of StoryJumper to create a storyboard that clearly presents the six essential elements of a story.

Now we will start creating a storybook using StoryJumper! We will review the storyline together, and show examples of different opening, middle, and ending scenes. Under the teacher’s guidance, students will start creating different parts of the stories. At the end of the class, students will have their own storybook ready to share!

Hi, I’m Ms. Steph and I’m an enthusiastic educator focused on instilling a passion for exploration in my students. I have a Bachelor of Science degree and am currently pursuing my Master of Education degree. I’ve always loved telling stories and using my imagination. I prioritize creativity in and out of the classroom. I have taught young preschool and grade school students to storytell as well as high school students the more technical aspects of a story in classes, such as IB English Literature. I have drafted several children’s books and look forward to inspiring my new students to do the same as we explore the art of storytelling in the “Journey of a Storyteller.”

Journey of a Storyteller

Is your child always telling stories? ​​What is it about stories that makes them so universally attractive? In this course, each student will learn to create their own storybook using StoryJumper. We will guide students to learn essential elements of stories including plot, theme, settings, characters, conflicts, and resolutions. Students will learn the ins and outs of StoryJumper, an online tool for making digital books, from inserting images to adding audio. They will be directed to brainstorm and outline their own storyboard using StoryJumper. Based on the storyboard, students will start creating their stories with a beginning, middle, and ending. At the end of the class, students will have their storybook created and they will share it with their friends to read together!

Course Outcome

Through stories, children are able to learn more about life, the world, and themselves. Kids can learn public speaking and presentation skills. They can become better articulators of information through the practice of telling stories. We can use storytelling to help kids learn facts about any subject. Storytelling helps children develop a deep understanding. For example, if they are learning a science lesson about plants, telling stories about plants and their characteristics could help students “internalize” the information in an interesting way. Storytelling also encourages children to be creative and use their imagination to discover the world around them!
