About The Course
How can we make video games for educational purposes? How can kids learn new skills while they are playing? Now they have the opportunity to create their own Roblox Game. They can learn to build games and use their imagination to create stories that naturally push them to think outside the box.
During this course, students will acquire skills such as problem-solving, logical thinking, creativity, and provide a boost in confidence. It also prepares children with the skills they need for the world of tomorrow. They will set up related platforms, brainstorm and discuss ideas with the class, and enjoy multiple hands-on activities.
We will start off by introducing Roblox and setting up a Roblox Account. Students will install Roblox Studio and Roblox Player and discuss the differences between them. Moreover, students will get to know various types of games and focus on different themes of Escape Room games in Roblox. They will pick and play through an Escape Room Game to discuss essential aspects of an Escape Room. Through brainstorming and making a visual board, students will understand what to include in their own Escape Room in the end. These fun and interactive classes will lay a solid foundation for building their own game.
Going deeper to Roblox Studio, students will learn about tabs, windows, actions, and plugins, and further, explore toolbox and menu. Then students will learn how to playtest their game, how to spawn characters into their game using spawn points, how to create and modify appearance such as color, materials, transparency, and how to add teams. By creating a colosseum, students will practice building room structures in their game. These classes will help students to understand and design the front end of their game.
Now students will learn the essence of Lua code! They will learn to create fundamental concepts through coding such as changing properties, color, materials, reflectance, creating scripts for kill blocks, rotating objects, and power-up blocks. They will create a rotating block that changes colors! Students will learn to create teleporters, moving blocks, and moving platforms. We will guide them to make moving kill blocks as an engaging hands-on activity! They will create a loading screen, pause menu, In-Game menu, and name tag. After the learning process, they will design and create a simple version Obby (Obstacle-based) game by combining all the scrips they coded.
In the end, students will plan out their own Escape Room Game, and make a well-structured blueprint based on the checklist. Now they will make the blueprint into reality! They will start creating their first room, add obstacles, hazards, and scripts to the room, and after debug each others’ code. Then they will continue to complete the other 11 level obstacles and make sure the room is functional with a unique theme. They will publish their own game in Roblox, challenge each other to break out of each other’s escape rooms, and present their final Escape Room project.
