Course Outcome

When people learn good habits such as these at a young age, they tend to carry these values with them well into adulthood. Stir the pancake mix, measure one cup of water, and roll out the dough…all of these cooking tasks help kids develop necessary academic, cognitive, and motor skills. Also, cooking involves a great deal of science. Kids learn what happens when certain ingredients are mixed together and what happens when the measurements are incorrect. Math skills come into play too and baking can be a great source of practical exercise for children to learn about arithmetic, fractions, decimals, geometry, and time management.

I know the 5 food groups. I know different food examples of different food groups. I understand the importance of having a balanced diet. I know the 6 nutrients. I know different nutrients in different types of food. I know the different functions of different nutrients. I know how to read a nutrition fact label. I understand the ingredients listed on a nutrition label. I know what ingredients need to be decreased in my diet.

Procedures and Skills

I know the process of cooking. I can prepare the corresponding ingredients. I know how to wash produce, measure ingredients, whisk (with a hand-held whisk), arrange items on the table, slice, peel, spread, mix, skewer food, pour, roll, flip, fry, bake, crack eggs into a bowl, shred cheese, cut foods with an unsharpened knife, and gather or clear away cooking utensils. I can use different appliances including a microwave, blender/mixer, pan, pot, and oven. I understand stove and pan safety.

Utilizations and Applications

I can create a worksheet including the food name, ingredients, cooking steps, and skills. I can apply the cooking skills learned in class and cook my special meal. I can use the cooking skills learned in my daily life. I can identify healthier food options by comparing ingredients. I know what ingredients to eat less to maintain a healthier eating habit.

About The Course

Learning to cook can encourage your children’s interests in food, and cultivate healthy eating habits and skills for life. While cooking, kids can practice creativity and use their imagination. We will have our children make food choices in the kitchen during the course. It will foster their creativity and decision-making skills, and bring our children a sense of achievement and self-sufficiency. With all the benefits of cooking for kids, why wait to get started? Bring your kids into the kitchen!

We will begin with nutrition education for students, and we will focus on learning about five food groups, fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy, and representative food examples. Through fill up a food card with information about their favorite food, students will get a better understanding of the origin of their favorite food. Together, we will work through cooking skills and recipes of the day, such as Monster Cookie Bites and Dreamy Ice Cream(y), based on the recipe menu! Students will be encouraged to brainstorm the special dish by making a page in a cookbook with their own recipe- a list of ingredients, steps with pictures, and drawings. After the preparation, they will bring the dish into reality!

We will move forward to explore six nutrients, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water, learn about what types of foods have those nutrients, and how various nutrients help our body function. Students will play a treasure hunt game at their homes to find food with different nutrients. They will learn more challenging cooking skills and cook awesome dishes, like Rainbow Funfetti Pancakes, and Crispy Cheesy Pizza! Then students will be engaged in cooking their own unique challenging meal from preparing ingredients to serving them on the table!

Now it’s time to discuss how to make better food decisions through learning ingredients lists in nutrition facts labels. Students will apply their learning by comparing different nutrition labels and identifying healthier alternative food ingredients. Students will learn advanced cooking skills and cook more complicated dishes including Homemade Spinach Ricotta Ravioli with Garlic Herb Sauce, and Crunchy Caramel Apple Pie. At the end of the class, students will cook their own advanced healthier dish by creatively adjusting the ingredients used in the dish!

Hi, my name is Ms. Steph. I’m an enthusiastic educator and I have a Bachelor of Science degree and am currently pursuing my Master of Education degree. I’ve always been very creative and especially enjoy crafting. I’ve carried this passion with me into the classroom for the past four years by prioritizing hands-on projects to teach science. For two years, I have overseen the engineering program of an “Around the World” themed summer camp. I started by showing students the country’s landmarks and then, discussed how we could build similar models. Students recreated the landmarks in the classroom.

The Culinary Adventure

Children learn by touching, tasting, feeling, smelling, observing, reading, and listening. This is why the kitchen is a perfect environment for learning – it hits a range of senses and a range of learning styles. In this project-based interactive course, students will get nutrition education including food groups, nutrients, and alternative food choices. Students will also learn different cooking skills with different appliances, like pots, pans, and ovens. And hands-on experiments with various creative cooking recipes from beginner to advanced. We will take them through the entire process of preparing a meal, from obtaining ingredients to cooking and presenting it on the table. At the end of each module, students will make their own creative meals at different levels!
